How to fix "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened" in Microsoft Word
The file is corrupt and cannot be opened.
What this error means
Word could not read the ZIP structure at all. The most common reason is a missing central directory — the index at the very end of the file — which is lost whenever a file is cut short.
Why it happens
- Incomplete download or email attachment
- Copying to a USB drive that was unplugged too early
- A crash in the middle of saving
How to fix it
- In Word, use File › Open › Browse, select the file, click the arrow next to Open and choose Open and Repair
- Try opening it in LibreOffice Writer, which is more tolerant of damage
- Upload it here: we rebuild the index from the parts that survived and show you the recovered text before you pay
About Word document files
A .docx file is really a ZIP folder of XML files: the text lives in word/document.xml, with styles, images and settings stored beside it. Most "corrupted" Word files are a damaged ZIP index or one broken XML part — the text itself is usually still there.
