How to fix "moov atom not found" in VLC, QuickTime, Windows Media Player
moov atom not found
What this error means
The video index is missing. This happens when recording stops unexpectedly — the camera or phone writes the index only at the very end.
Why it happens
- Battery died or card was removed while recording
- Recording app crashed
- File copied before the camera finished saving
How to fix it
- Keep the original file — never format the card or delete it
- Rebuilding the index needs a working "reference" video from the same camera with the same settings; we are adding this repair soon
- Run the free check here to confirm the video data is still present
About MP4 video files
An MP4 is built from boxes ("atoms"): the video and sound data in an mdat box, and an index in a moov box that tells players where every frame is. Without a complete index, players cannot play anything — but the raw video data is usually still in the file.
