How to fix "Adobe Acrobat could not open the file because it is either not a…" in Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat could not open the file because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged.

What this error means

The file does not start with a PDF header where Acrobat expects one — the file may be a different format, or there is junk data in front of the real PDF.

Why it happens

  • A website returned an HTML error page saved with a .pdf name
  • Junk bytes were added at the start during download
  • The file is completely empty or zero-filled

How to fix it

  1. Open the file in a text editor: if it starts with <html>, it is a web page, not a PDF — download it again
  2. Upload it here: we find the real PDF inside and strip the junk

About PDF document files

A PDF is a set of numbered objects (pages, fonts, images) plus a cross-reference table at the end that says where each object starts. When a PDF is cut short, that table and the end-of-file marker are lost, so readers think the file is empty — but the pages before the cut are usually still there.
