How to fix "We found a problem with some content in 'workbook.xlsx'" in Microsoft Excel
We found a problem with some content in 'workbook.xlsx'. Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can?
What this error means
Excel could read the package but one or more parts are invalid — a broken sheet, a style reference that does not exist, or a link to a missing part.
Why it happens
- A third-party tool or script generated invalid XML
- Saving was interrupted
- Formatting or charts that point to parts which no longer exist
How to fix it
- Click Yes and read the repair log Excel shows — it lists what was removed
- If formulas or sheets went missing, upload the original here: we fix the XML instead of discarding it
About Excel workbook files
An .xlsx workbook is a ZIP of XML parts: each sheet is a separate file (xl/worksheets/sheet1.xml…), text cells share one string table, and xl/workbook.xml lists the sheets. When the workbook index is lost, the sheets are often still intact.
