How to fix "Windows cannot open the folder" in Windows Explorer, WinZip, 7-Zip

Windows cannot open the folder. The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid.

What this error means

Windows' built-in ZIP support is strict: any damage to the index makes the whole archive "invalid".

Why it happens

  • Missing or damaged central directory
  • A ZIP64 archive (over 4 GB) that Windows cannot read
  • The file is not really a ZIP (wrong extension)

How to fix it

  1. Try 7-Zip, which is more tolerant
  2. Upload it here for a free check of what is inside

About ZIP archive files

A ZIP archive stores each file with its own small header, then a central directory (the index) at the very end. If the end of the file is missing, tools say the archive is invalid — but every file before the cut can still be read.
